SFDS Weekly Update #20- 1/26/23

Dear Academy Families,

Next week in Grades 5-8 we will be taking a special moment out of our religion curriculum to look at Family Life. All schools in the Diocese of Brooklyn are mandated to teach this curriculum which focuses on God’s gift of Family, of Self, of Life, of Love, and of Community. We ask that you continue the conversation at home in regards to the Church’s teaching in regards to living a healthy and holy family life.

St. Jude’s Math-a-thon: It is that time of year that St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy participates in St. Jude’s Math-A-thon program. A lot of children are helped by the generosity of our school community. This year you can do your donations online and order your prizes online and have them delivered to your door or you can send in your donations to Mrs. Foti and she will take care of the paperwork and get the prizes sent to the school.

Principal/Assistant Principal for a Day: Just a reminder that the Principal/Assistant Principal essay is due this coming Thursday February 2nd. . This year we are asked as a school to Ignite the Catholic Imagination. Students in Grades 1-8 in an essay (Grades 5-8) or a paragraph (Grades 1-4) tell us what makes Catholic Schools Special or different from other schools.   During Catholic Schools Week one student from Grades 5-8 will be chosen to be the Principal for a day and one student from Gardes 1-4 will be chosen to be Assiatnt Principal.  Good luck to all who enter.

I-Ready Mid-Year Diagnostic Test: This past week all students in Grades K-8 began the I-Ready mid-year diagnostic test. Towards the end of next week all of your children in Grades K-8 will be sent home with their I-Ready mid-year diagnostic test results in Reading and Math. One of the components that we as a school will be focusing on is growth. The i-Ready growth model offers two complementary growth measures for every student that show how much growth is expected, as well as how much students should grow to help them achieve their goals. These measures help teachers set goals, see how much their students have progressed, and make informed instructional decisions to help put all students on a path toward proficiency or advanced proficiency levels. For more information please click here. Of course if you have any questions please be in touch with your child’s teacher and/or the administration.

Paint Night: On Friday, February 3rd, from 7-9 pm, Mrs. Gina Todd (one of the academy's art teachers) will host an adult paint night in the SFDS Small Hall. Attendees will receive step-by-step instructions to create a beautiful painting. Light refreshments will be provided, and guests are welcome to bring their own appetizers and beverages. Please note this event is for adults 21+ and is $30 per person.
